Trove Detective: John F. O’Reilly’s Family Notices.

Looking Back with Hindsight

Now that I have discovered so much about John and Maude O’Reilly it’s hard to look back and remember how much family history research has changed over the last decade or so. The internet has it’s vices and virtues but today I can go into Trove and easily find marriage, death and funeral notices for John O’Reilly (mostly).

MARRIAGE

SILVER WEDDING

FUNERAL NOTICE

Also from the 1940 ‘Family Notices.’, The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 – 1957), 11 September, p. 4.

O’REILLY.-Requiem Mass for the repose of  the soul of the late Mr. JOHN FRANCIS O’REILLY will be celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Burwood road, Hawthorn THIS DAY Wednesday, 11th September, at 11 am.  The funeral will leave the church at the conclusion of the Mass (approximately 11.30 am.) for the Burwood Cemetery.

Just in case, there’s any doubt about the value of technology or text corrections on Trove, this is how the funeral notice above, looked last week before I edited it. Not much chance of it being picked up by a search engine even with the right O’Reilly spelling. The surname may have been edited previously. I found it on the same page as the Death Notice. Still no sign of a 1971 death notice for Maude O’Reilly in Brisbane. Sorry but I’m still looking for photos. At least I have some more addresses now.
